I agree that if you have a time constraint you should state it.

Additionally, ASAP is peremptory. It says that your needs are more urgent than the other needs I have to attend to right now. You can try to *persuade* me you should get priority, but unless you're my boss you're in no position to assert priority. I take longer to respond and am less helpful when e-mails include this term.

I also participate in a couple of online discussion boards on technical topics, and I'm surprised by the number of posts, generally from new users, that pose a question and ask for a response "ASAP." Think about this. Nobody gets paid to share expertise and experience on these forums, so by definition they are low on anyone's priority list. People who do write do so out of generosity and helpfulness. If you are depending on people's generosity and helpfulness, state what you need clearly. But don't presume to order them around.

Nice post, Paul. I'll use some of these concepts in my public speaking and presentation training sessions. Good application of the five (or six)W's.

I really enjoyed this book. I actually used it for my work. I have been freelancing as a writer for the past year in peopleperhour.com. I enjoyed the advice in chapters 5 and 6 "notes for novices" and "more motivational advice for novices" as I continue to consider myself a novice writer with huge lack of motivation. I really liked the "other voices-comments from freelancers" (i don't remember the title now) also. I would really like to thank Nate Hendley for this book!

Paul:

Thanks for sharing this. I often refer to your book 'The Six-Figure Freelancer'for inspiration to keep myself motivated to write--especially when prospecting. In fact, Chapter 4: The Twin Fears is bit dog-eared.

One of the best decisions I made was to specialize. It alleviated a great deal of stress when it came to focusing on who, what, and where I was going to spend my marketing dollars and time. I took my life experiences and positioned myself as an expert in my field. Most recently this specialization has landed me an ongoing corporate project.
